How Tow Trucks Affect Your Vehicle Insurance
It may seem odd to think that a tow truck driver could have a negative impact on your motor insurance policy, but it is not. When you register for a new motor insurance policy, you are given a few things with your paperwork. In most cases, your insurance company will give you a sticker saying DO NOT TOW on it. This sticker is of utmost importance.
DO NOT TOW stickers ensure that no unauthorised tow truck operators try and remove your vehicle from the accident scene. The reason they are not allowed to do so is because most cheap car insurance companies will work in conjunction with certain tow truck operators. They will have a mutually beneficial relationship with reputable tow truck companies, ones which will take your vehicle to the authorised repair shop or scrap yard.
It is important that you are extremely wary of unscrupulous tow truck operators. They will do anything to obtain your business, and there have even been stories of bad tow truck drivers pretending to be authorised by their victims’ insurance companies. Once your vehicle is in the hands of an unauthorised tow truck company, you could have your vehicle placed in their storage yard. You will then be charged exorbitant amounts of money per day for your vehicle being in their yard. The problem here is that if you allow someone other than a tow truck operator authorised by your insurance company to take your motor vehicle, then your insurance company will not have to pay out for this service. Bear in mind that the cost of a vehicle towing and storage can quickly race into the thousands.
In conclusion, it is easy to see why you need to have that important sticker on your motor vehicle, and to not allow yourself to be deterred by smooth talking tow truck operators.
